A strong theme in Of Mice and Men is discrimination. During this time period discrimination towards race, mental illnesses, and women are very common and each takes place throughout the novella. It is shown that physical attributes do not define who a person is truly within.

Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, is a novella taking place during the Great Depression. Published in 1937, the author peaks into the life of the two migrant workers George and Lennie. Lennie is mentally disabled making George’s life more complicated in a time where finding work is already tough.
